Julie London

JulieJulie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) is an American performer and actress. Her career spans more than 40 years. London was a torch-singing singer known for her smooth, melodic singing voice and languid contralto and recorded more than 30 albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. Her debut album "Cry Me a River" was recorded by her was inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. In addition to the recording, London was nominated for an award called a Golden Globe Award in 1974 in her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her career as an actress. London's 35-year-long acting career began around 1944 with roles in movies. These included roles as the female lead in a variety of westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. Her final studio album was released in 1969. Her success continued as the female star role in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she played alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband who produced the show.
